Antique limestone medieval corbel. England 16th century.

    Showing signs of Polychrome decoration.

    Carved head with his tongue protruding perhaps due to the weight of the ceiling boss. He is wearing what looks like a leather hat with a strap accros similar to the example shown which we also have for sale.

    Corbels were a way of visually linking a roof structure to the wall, helping it to seem part of the fabric of the building rather than just sitting on top of it.
